Recommended outings and activities

Lady Grey country club has a nine hole course with sand greens and fantastic views of the Witteberg.

Courts are at the Lady Grey country club. We have racquets and balls available for hire.

You can enjoy a picnic at the Lady Grey dam, which is situated in a beautiful sandstone gorge about 2.5km from Comfrey Cottage.

The drives up Joubert’s Pass or to Witfontein Dam and to Spionkop also offer many scenic spots where you can enjoy sundowners or just take in the panoramic views and de-stress away from the buzz of city life.

Come fly fishing on some of the best wild trout fishing rivers in the country. Craig Ridsdale, Lady Grey’s fly fishing guide, offers guided river fishing on the Karnmelkspruit for Trout (80kms, including “The Gorge” – 22kms), or the Kraai River (50kms) for Trout and Yellowfish. Dam fishing is also an option. Trout rig is available for hire and flies for sale.

Wild Trout Association rules apply to these waters, i.e. no spinners, artificial lures or barbed hooks allowed, no pets, catch and release only.

Craig has an infectious passion for the area and knows the Karnmelkspuit River backwards, I suspect he even knows some of the fish by name” – Tony Kietzman, Fly Fishing Oct/Nov 2002

Contact Craig on 051 6030494 or 0824571920 for prices and further details.

You could just relax in Comfrey’s garden and watch the abundant birdlife, or be more adventurous and head into the mountains or up Joubert’s Pass to spot some of the over 200 species that have been identified.

A visit to the Vulture breeding colony at The Gorge is another special outing where you have the opportunity of viewing these impressive birds.

Mountain biking

The quiet farm roads around Lady Grey provide a variety of cycling routes, from casual exploring around town to the challenge of Joubert’s Pass. You are guaranteed of magnificent scenery, fresh mountain air and a cycling experience to remember.

Hikes and nature walks

There are numerous walks and day hikes to be explored. A pleasant walk to start with is the 5km to Lady Grey dam and back, which is set in an impressive sandstone gorge. You could also cross the stream at the end of our property and spend hours rambling around the mountain. Across town explore Spionkop for a different view over Lady Grey.

For the more energetic, follow the route of the Lammergeier Mountain Challenge which takes you to the peaks above Joubert’s Pass.

Geological and wild flower trips up Joubert’s Pass

George and Grant are registered tour guides. We offer trips up Joubert’s Pass in open 4X4 vehicles. Trips generally take about two – three hours but can be tailored to your needs. On these trips we will introduce you to the alpine plants and interesting geological features of the Witteberg. The wild flower season usually lasts from September through to April/May, with the best months usually being December to February depending on the rains. By contrast, the peaks are often under snow during the winter months.
